Insulin Treatment Improves Hepatic Morphology and Function Through Modulation of Hepatic Signals After Severe Trauma

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of insulin therapy on hepatic function, structure, and hepatic cytokine expression during the hypermetabolic cascade post burn. Insulin therapy exerted anti-inflammatory properties and improved liver function and morphology, proliferation, and apoptosis through anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic mediators. Insulin administration restores liver homeostasis and function, which have been shown to be critical for survival of critically ill patients.
